15-a-side rugby, also known as rugby union, is one of the world’s most popular team sports. The game, which originated in England, is distinguished by its physical intensity, team spirit and values of respect and friendship.

Rugby 15-a-side has its roots in the early 19th century in Rugby, England, where legend has it that a schoolboy picked up the ball by hand during a soccer match, thus initiating the sport. The first rules were codified in 1845, and the first club, Blackheath Rugby Club, was founded in 1858.

XV rugby rules

15-a-side rugby is played between two teams of 15 players each, on a rectangular pitch 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. The aim of the game is to score more points than the opposition by flattening the ball behind the opposition’s in-goal line (try) or by kicking penalties. A try is worth 5 points, a conversion 2 points, a penalty 3 points and a drop-goal 3 points.

The shooting lines mark the strategic areas of the court: the 3-point line is 6.75 metres from the basket. The free-throw line is 4.6 metres from the basket. Another special feature of the pitch is the area known as the “key”, where players from the attacking team cannot stay for more than 3 seconds when their team has the ball. The dimensions of this restrictive zone/racket are 4.90 m wide and 5.80 m long.

The dimensions

General pitch dimensions :

– Total length (including end zones): between 120 and 144 meters
– Length of playing area (excluding end zones): between 94 and 100 meters
– Field width: between 68 and 70 meters

Dimensions of marking lines :

– Centre line: located at the center of the pitch (50 metres from each goal line)
– 22-meter lines: 22 meters from each goal line
– 10-metre line: 10 metres from the halfway line on each side
– 5-meter line: parallel to each touchline, 5 meters from it
– 15-metre line: parallel to each touchline, 15 metres from it

In this article, we are going to look together closely at the dimensions that exist for three sports: tennis, badminton and pickleball. In reality, there is much more to racquet sports than these three disciplines, such as squash or frescobol (the beach racquet game)!

Tennis

Some time ago we did a series called “History of sport”, which explains a sport in a few slides. Here is the one about tennis, so you can learn more about this sport.

Size of the pitch

The overall surface area of a tennis court must be at least 17.07m x 28m and can be as large as 18m x 36m. There are 2 ways to play tennis: singles and doubles. For singles, the playing area must be 8.23 m wide and 23.77 m long. If the ball falls beyond this area, it is a fault.

For doubles, the court must be 23.77 m long (as for singles) and, above all, 10.97 m wide, which means it must be 1.37 m longer on each side than for singles.

Badminton

As in tennis, this episode of “Sports History: Badminton” provides a condensed overview of badminton.

Size of the pitch

Like the tennis court, the badminton court is the same length (13.40m) for doubles and singles. Only the playing area changes depending on the number of players on the court. The width for singles is 5.20m, compared with 6.10m for doubles.

Pickleball

Pickleball is a dynamic sport that combines the best of tennis, badminton and table tennis! Played mainly in doubles, but also in singles, it takes place on a badminton court with a tennis net. It’s a friendly sport that’s accessible to everyone, whatever their age or skill level!

Size of the pitch

A pickleball court has three main zones:

• Two opposing service areas
• 1 central non-volley zone known as the kitchen, where the net is positioned.

The service areas are divided, with a left and right side divided by a central line. The service area is 4.60 m long by 6.10 m wide.

The central non-volleyball area is 2.1m long and 6.10m wide.

The dimensions of a FIBA-standard pitch

In accordance with the international standards established by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), a standard basketball court is 28m long and 15m wide. The basketball goal is located 1.20m from the touch line at both ends of the court, 7.50m away and 3.05m high.

The basket 3×3

Much more than just a variation of traditional basketball, 3×3 basketball is a game that combines the intensity of classic basketball with the spontaneity and speed of street games. Popularised in urban districts, 3×3 has emerged as an official discipline with distinct rules and international status. As proof, 3×3 is one of the 3 new disciplines at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

They are smaller than those of a standard basketball court to encourage quick action and transition play. To be precise, the court is 15 metres long and 11 metres wide. The backboard is located at a height of 2.2 metres, slightly lower than the 3.05 metres required for traditional basketball. The 1-point shooting lines are marked 6.75 metres either side of the rim, while the free-throw line is marked 5.8 metres from the basket.

3×3 basketball courts can be built in concrete, asphalt or synthetic materials, and are often equipped with portable boards to make them easy to move around and set up temporarily for events.

11-a-side pitch

The dimensions of a football pitch can vary, with a length between 90 and 120 metres (measured along the touchline) and a width between 45 and 90 meters (measured along the goal line). As a result, the total surface area of the pitch also varies, ranging from 4,050 to 10,800 square meters. That’s why some pitches look bigger than others, because it’s technically possible.

8-a-side pitch

What are the differences between 11-a-side football and 8-a-side football ? What you need to know is that 8-a-side football is suitable for children aged between 9 and 12, i.e. from U10 to U13. As a general rule, an 8-a-side football pitch can be half an 11-a-side football pitch, but because pitch dimensions vary, here are the regulatory dimensions: a length of between 60 and 70 meters, with a width of between 45 and 55 meters.

Soccer 5-a-side pitch

The dimensions of soccer pitches are between 18 and 20 meters wide and 30 to 35 meters long, according to FFF specifications. The main feature of the Foot5 (also known as Five) installation is the absence of sidelines and conventional goals. Instead, the game takes place in a zone delimited by perimeter panels topped by a ball-stop net, allowing the ball to remain constantly in play.

Step 1 – The analysis, a key step

We take the time to review each of your comments, the observations made to our commercial team or through our client support service and the remarks submitted during commercial workshops, fairs or in the field. We use this feedback to properly understand your needs and the final users requirements in order to determine:

• Who is the final user of our equipment, what are his profile and behaviour?

The answers we gathered enable us to write a design brief, allowing our engineering office to work on new innovations following our continuous improvement processes.

Step 2 – The study: define the best solutions

The engineering office and the managers analyse the best answer to the identified needs among all the different propositions made and its manufacturing cost. Afterwards, the product is modelled in 3D to get an insight of:

• Parts to be manufactured
• Parts to buy (with a consultation and an approval of the purchasing department)
• Miscellaneous item to take into account for the manufacturing of the product (packing, shipping)

Once the template is approved by the management, a prototype must be manufactured to test the product in real life conditions.

Step 3 – The prototyping: the iteration principle

A prototype is manufactured and assembled by our team. This prototype will be tested with certified processes and real life tests. If the testing phase isn’t satisfying enough, we re-build new prototypes until we get an optimum level of quality and security for a product that best answers your needs and conforms to standards. This iterative process that could last for hundreds of hours is the key to a successful manufacturing process. For example, the design, testing and modelling steps of our dB-Lock flange for handrails required more than 1300 hours of work before reaching the recommended level of quality.

Step 4 – The manufacturing and further testing

With the tests satisfactorily passed, the product is industrialized. This step is crucial and requires to perfectly handle the supply and the manufacturing of the products’ parts as well as the synchronization of all the activities of the factory: cutting, drilling, welding, shot blasting, plastic-coating, packing… Simultaneously, we create the technical documents that will be provided to you (technical manuals, installation procedures and other information that you may need while using the product). Finally, further testing is performed by an independent agency to ensure the product you receive is compliant with the standards.

Combine a front frame with arches to build a handball goal

A handball goal is made of two distinct elements : a front frame and a pair of arches to maintain the front frame. Dozens of frames and arches combinations enable us to provide you with an answer to any utilization mode with all the different frames, arches, material and coating options.

Which type of frame for which use?

Two types of front frames are available in the Metalu Plast product range. With a playable dimension of 3 x 2 m, they are made of 80 x 80 mm tubes, either aluminium or steel with net fixation nylon hooks.

The Madison front frame is our high-end goal. The PostLockⓇ assembly system design (registered design) ensures an exceptional front frame rigidity and is particularly adapted to high competition. The Madison front frames are made of galvanized steel.

The removable front frame is assembled with reinforced aluminium junction pieces. This type of front frames is adapted to training and to school use. The removable front frames are available either in steel or aluminium.

The PostLockⓇ system is a registered design that allows the posts locking with internal clamping plates. The system enables a very stiff assembly and ensures a perfect holding over time. With the PostLockⓇ system, the routing and the assembly of our products becomes as simple as with removable front frames, while offering an exceptional rigidity for high-level handball practice.

Concerning fixations, both front frames are available :

• in mobile version : the 2 m posts are designed to flush the ground. The lower part of the posts is locked with a plastic plug.
• in sleeve installation version : the 2,36 m posts include a 36 cm part for ground socketing. Aluminium sleeves are provided.

Which type of handball arches to choose?

In order to complete your handball goal, you will need to add a pair of arches that depends on the environment of use of the goal. Metalu Plast offers 7 types of arches which allow you to adapt your goal to the needed gameplay :

• Ø 50 mm fixed arches with a double stabilization bar and 4 anchors : used in competition and high competition. The double stabilization bar and the double anchoring system reinforce the solidity of the structure.
• Ø 50 mm fixed arches with stabilization bar and 2 anchors : used both for competition and high competition.
• Ø 32 mm fixed arches with or without stabilization bar and 2 anchors : recommanded for school use and for training.
• Folding arches with 2 anchors : folding arches are used in most cases to be added to an existing structure. These arches enable space-saving for the practice of another activity in the structure and an easier maintenance of the sports hall.
• Liftable arches : these arches are mostly used for training. Once lifted against the wall, they avoid storage after each use, which is a not negligible advantage for saving time and space.

Plastic-coated or with vinyl strips handball goal, which coating to choose for my handball goal?

The hanball front frames can be covered with two types of coating :

• Plastic-coated front frames : red and white stripes are painted through a plastic-coating process. This coating offers a better hold over time.
• Vinyl strips front frames : aluminium or steel front frames are painted in red and white vinyl strips are glued to the front frame. This coating is more economical and is recommended for an indoor use.
