15-a-side rugby, also known as rugby union, is one of the world’s most popular team sports. The game, which originated in England, is distinguished by its physical intensity, team spirit and values of respect and friendship.

Rugby 15-a-side has its roots in the early 19th century in Rugby, England, where legend has it that a schoolboy picked up the ball by hand during a soccer match, thus initiating the sport. The first rules were codified in 1845, and the first club, Blackheath Rugby Club, was founded in 1858.

XV rugby rules

15-a-side rugby is played between two teams of 15 players each, on a rectangular pitch 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. The aim of the game is to score more points than the opposition by flattening the ball behind the opposition’s in-goal line (try) or by kicking penalties. A try is worth 5 points, a conversion 2 points, a penalty 3 points and a drop-goal 3 points.

The shooting lines mark the strategic areas of the court: the 3-point line is 6.75 metres from the basket. The free-throw line is 4.6 metres from the basket. Another special feature of the pitch is the area known as the “key”, where players from the attacking team cannot stay for more than 3 seconds when their team has the ball. The dimensions of this restrictive zone/racket are 4.90 m wide and 5.80 m long.

The dimensions

General pitch dimensions :

– Total length (including end zones): between 120 and 144 meters
– Length of playing area (excluding end zones): between 94 and 100 meters
– Field width: between 68 and 70 meters

Dimensions of marking lines :

– Centre line: located at the center of the pitch (50 metres from each goal line)
– 22-meter lines: 22 meters from each goal line
– 10-metre line: 10 metres from the halfway line on each side
– 5-meter line: parallel to each touchline, 5 meters from it
– 15-metre line: parallel to each touchline, 15 metres from it

In this article, we are going to look together closely at the dimensions that exist for three sports: tennis, badminton and pickleball. In reality, there is much more to racquet sports than these three disciplines, such as squash or frescobol (the beach racquet game)!

Tennis

Some time ago we did a series called “History of sport”, which explains a sport in a few slides. Here is the one about tennis, so you can learn more about this sport.

Size of the pitch

The overall surface area of a tennis court must be at least 17.07m x 28m and can be as large as 18m x 36m. There are 2 ways to play tennis: singles and doubles. For singles, the playing area must be 8.23 m wide and 23.77 m long. If the ball falls beyond this area, it is a fault.

For doubles, the court must be 23.77 m long (as for singles) and, above all, 10.97 m wide, which means it must be 1.37 m longer on each side than for singles.

Badminton

As in tennis, this episode of “Sports History: Badminton” provides a condensed overview of badminton.

Size of the pitch

Like the tennis court, the badminton court is the same length (13.40m) for doubles and singles. Only the playing area changes depending on the number of players on the court. The width for singles is 5.20m, compared with 6.10m for doubles.

Pickleball

Pickleball is a dynamic sport that combines the best of tennis, badminton and table tennis! Played mainly in doubles, but also in singles, it takes place on a badminton court with a tennis net. It’s a friendly sport that’s accessible to everyone, whatever their age or skill level!

Size of the pitch

A pickleball court has three main zones:

• Two opposing service areas
• 1 central non-volley zone known as the kitchen, where the net is positioned.

The service areas are divided, with a left and right side divided by a central line. The service area is 4.60 m long by 6.10 m wide.

The central non-volleyball area is 2.1m long and 6.10m wide.

To get the best out of this sport, the playing surface should be at least 9.14 m wide and 18.29 m long. We are talking here about the pitch + clearances.

Basketball is an emblematic sport played throughout the world and dominated by the United States since the beginning of time. The sport has become particularly popular thanks to the NBA and its stars.

The dimensions of a FIBA-standard pitch

In accordance with the international standards established by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), a standard basketball court is 28m long and 15m wide. The basketball goal is located 1.20m from the touch line at both ends of the court, 7.50m away and 3.05m high.

The shooting lines mark the strategic areas of the court: the 3-point line is 6.75 metres from the basket. The free-throw line is 4.6 metres from the basket. Another special feature of the pitch is the area known as the “key”, where players from the attacking team cannot stay for more than 3 seconds when their team has the ball. The dimensions of this restrictive zone/racket are 4.90 m wide and 5.80 m long.

The basket 3×3

Much more than just a variation of traditional basketball, 3×3 basketball is a game that combines the intensity of classic basketball with the spontaneity and speed of street games. Popularised in urban districts, 3×3 has emerged as an official discipline with distinct rules and international status. As proof, 3×3 is one of the 3 new disciplines at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

They are smaller than those of a standard basketball court to encourage quick action and transition play. To be precise, the court is 15 metres long and 11 metres wide. The backboard is located at a height of 2.2 metres, slightly lower than the 3.05 metres required for traditional basketball. The 1-point shooting lines are marked 6.75 metres either side of the rim, while the free-throw line is marked 5.8 metres from the basket.

3×3 basketball courts can be built in concrete, asphalt or synthetic materials, and are often equipped with portable boards to make them easy to move around and set up temporarily for events.

11-a-side pitch

The dimensions of a football pitch can vary, with a length between 90 and 120 metres (measured along the touchline) and a width between 45 and 90 meters (measured along the goal line). As a result, the total surface area of the pitch also varies, ranging from 4,050 to 10,800 square meters. That’s why some pitches look bigger than others, because it’s technically possible.

8-a-side pitch

What are the differences between 11-a-side football and 8-a-side football ? What you need to know is that 8-a-side football is suitable for children aged between 9 and 12, i.e. from U10 to U13. As a general rule, an 8-a-side football pitch can be half an 11-a-side football pitch, but because pitch dimensions vary, here are the regulatory dimensions: a length of between 60 and 70 meters, with a width of between 45 and 55 meters.

Soccer 5-a-side pitch

The dimensions of soccer pitches are between 18 and 20 meters wide and 30 to 35 meters long, according to FFF specifications. The main feature of the Foot5 (also known as Five) installation is the absence of sidelines and conventional goals. Instead, the game takes place in a zone delimited by perimeter panels topped by a ball-stop net, allowing the ball to remain constantly in play.
